Bringing Next Generation Safety to Plant Machinery
On construction sites across the UK, blind spots around large plant machinery are one of the leading causes of accidents. Operators often have restricted visibility, while ground workers move in and out of danger zones. The result is an ongoing challenge for plant hire companies and contractors who want to keep sites safe, compliant and efficient.
That’s why Brigade Electronics developed the Backeye® 360 AI Camera System – an innovative safety solution designed specifically for heavy plant. And when B&W Plant Hire wanted to trial this cutting-edge technology, they turned to AJT Installs for expert installation.
What Makes the Backeye® 360 AI Different?
Unlike traditional reversing cameras, the Backeye® 360 AI uses four ultra-wide cameras mounted around the machine. These cameras combine to create a seamless 360° bird’s-eye view, displayed on a monitor in the cab.
The real breakthrough is the AI human detection system. The Backeye® 360 doesn’t just show what’s around the machine, it actively detects when a person enters a high-risk zone and instantly alerts the operator. For busy construction sites, this means a significant reduction in blind spots and a faster response to potential hazards.
The Installation at B&W Plant Hire
Our engineers fitted the Backeye® 360 AI to one of B&W’s diggers. Cameras were carefully mounted to provide complete coverage, wiring was routed into the cab, and the in-cab monitor was installed in the operator’s line of sight.
Calibration is critical for a system like this, so the AI detection zones were set up to cover all danger areas around the machine. We then carried out a series of live tests to ensure the 360° image was smooth and that the AI alerts triggered correctly whenever a person entered the zone.
The results were immediate. The operator had full visibility around the digger for the first time, with added confidence from the AI system warning of risks in real time.
The Impact for Plant Safety
For B&W Plant Hire, the installation shows the real-world impact of bringing advanced technology into plant machinery. Operators gain confidence, ground workers are better protected, and sites become safer overall. It also helps companies stay ahead of compliance requirements and demonstrates a strong commitment to health and safety.
AJT Installs and Brigade: Delivering Safety Together
As approved installation partners with Brigade Electronics, AJT Installs is now bringing the Backeye® 360 AI system to plant fleets nationwide. With years of experience fitting advanced safety and electrical systems across HGVs, vans and now plant machinery, we understand both the technology and the operational challenges plant hire companies face.
The Backeye® 360 AI is more than just a camera – it’s a step change in how plant machinery safety is managed. And with the right installation partner, it can transform day-to-day operations on site.
